Over the chilly months, we’re diving into the fascinating lives of the birds gracing Trentham’s lake – and today, we’re talking about the Wigeon! 🦆✨

These medium-sized dabbling ducks, similar in size to the mallard, are winter visitors in the UK, with nearly half a million migrating here from the north and east to escape the cold. While there’s a small breeding population in the uplands of England and northern Scotland, most Wigeon are here just for the winter season. ❄️

Wigeon are identified by their small compact beaks and small rounded heads. The males have a rich chestnut neck and head with a yellow forehead patch. They also have a lush pink breast and grey barred body, with a large white underwing seen in flight. The female is a much muted version of the male, lacking the chestnut head and neck. 🦆💦

The Wigeon is another amber list bird species found at Trentham We currently have one pair of Wigeon on the lake, who tend to keep to the quieter south end of the lake 🌊

On Friday, our amazing garden team teamed up with a fantastic bulb-planting machine from Lubbe & Sons to plant thousands of native English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) next to the amphitheatre. This is the start of our brand-new Bluebell Meadow, and we can’t wait to see it transform into a sea of blue next spring! 🌸🐝

Over time, this meadow will expand as the bulbs spread naturally, creating a stunning display and a vital source of nectar for pollinators. 🦋🌼

💡 Did you know? Bluebells are full of folklore! Some believed they were used in witches’ potions, while others warned that stepping into a ring of bluebells might enchant you under fairy magic! 🧚‍♀️
